A client can engage Bovina Mountain Consulting (BMC) on an ad hoc basis and simply pay for the number of consultation hours used. This arrangement is subject to availability of time and is the least efficient method of working for BMC as it interrupts work flow and does not allow time and availability to be planned ahead. As a result, this is the most expensive option for the client. Several long standing clients started their involvement with BMC using this arrangement and moved on after a short period to retainer or project arrangements – see below. Clients find the hourly arrangement an attractive means to get acquainted with BMC and vice versa.

This mode locks in a fixed number of hours of availability per month based on size of retainer. The hourly rate is discounted compared to the ad hoc rate. The client is prioritized over hourly customers. The client uses or loses the hours on a monthly basis. Should it be necessary, the client can purchase additional hours for overtime work in a given month at the agreed retainer rate. The retainer arrangement is for a minimum of 6 months (usually 12 months).

This mode of operation suits a set piece of work that can be defined by milestones, deliverables and a timeline. An estimate of time required is made and included in a formal proposal. The calculated cost generally works out to an hourly rate that is less than the retainer rate. Normally, payment arrangements will include an upfront installment and multiple subsequent payments tied to agreed deliverables defined in a Gantt chart. The final payment general is tied to the final deliverable.
